Takin Care Of Business...

In an obvious response to the dumbass drivel spewed out by the limousine lefties at Moveon.Org, a Bush supporter put together this piece. The numbers don't lie, folks...

Quiet Monday after a fun, sun-filled weekend.

Spent most of Saturday up at Slugger's hitting baseballs, watching hoops and knocking back $2.50 Old Styles. Slugger's is right smack-dab in the middle of Wrigleyville, so it was really odd to see Sox legend Minnie Minoso hanging out there drinking. 82 years old and still spry as ever...very gracious fella. I've run into him out and about on a few other occasions and he always has time for a quick hello.

As for the NCAAs, looks like the Duke empire is gonna steamroll to yet another title. For the longest time, I had nothing but the highest respect for Coach K (don't even ask me to spell his name) and his program, but after freading more and more about it, it seems like he's an egomanical power freak. My buddy Tom and I were talking Saturday at the bar about how Duke grads never seem to go far in the NBA...he (a former college player himself) thinks it's because Coach K is so focused on making his team win that he doesn't work with players on their individual skills at all. Food for thought.

Kris and I took the pooch and my buddy Aaron over to the park yesterday for some fungoes and catch. Great time...and then the rain came. Whipped up some pasta e fagoli and panzanella last night which both came out tasty.
Ahhh...another Monday...

Perfect weekend up until the stroms hit last night. Spent most of Saturday at Sluggers watching hoops and knocking back Old Style. Made a trip up to the batting cages which was all well and good until I fouled a pitch off the top of my foot.

I hear Chernobyl is lovely in spring...

This site is without a doubt ine of the most fascinating I've ever seen. It's put together by a female Russian motorcycle enthusiast who enjoys riding around and taking snaps of Chernobyl and the surrounding wastelands. Look beyond her broken English and take in some of the photos...it's eerily breathtaking.
It's Raining, It's Pouring....

It's not April yet, but it's still raining cats and dogs today. Just like it did yesterday. I'm supposed to hit the links tomorrow, but my guess is that Fresh Meadows is gonna be more like Fresh MUD-dows...so I don't see it happening. I don't want to back out of my foursome though--so hopefully the rest of them share my sentiment.

Syracuse got rolled right over by the Crimson Tide last night. Now I owe David the 'Bama guy at work a 6 pack. I'm 0 for 2 on NCAA bets this year...not to mention the fact that I only had like 10 teams in the Sweet 16 and Kris and I are drowning in her office spread pool. Grrrr. Once again, I have to change who I root for...I'm now pulling for Illinois. Sheesh, I change NCAA affiliations like my buddy Don changes presidential candidates.

The dumbass Chubs traded Juan Cruz to Atlanta yesterday. This guy was yet another one of their can't miss kids who never got the job done. Erratic at best and downright shitty at his worst, he's destined for a long career of shuttling between the majors and minors.

Vouchin' for Vouchers...

Solid piece in today's WSJ about how school vouchers really do work, but the "Reverend" Jackson still bitches about them...

It's pouring here today. Thought we weren't supposed to get showers until April.

After this latest freaky revelation I wonder if Michael Jackson has any fans left at all? Downright bizarre.

Also on a musicial bent, I have a new 70s band that I'm obsessed with-Fleetwood Mac. Before that it was Steely Dan and before them Chicago. I've been listening to them a lot lately...pretty goof harmony between Stevie Nicks and the other chick, and there's some great acoustic guitar work in there too.

Speaking of guitar, I've got relatively simple "homework" for my next lesson Friday that I am all kinds of befuddled about. Jeremy went over it during our lesson Friday, but for some reason I can't seem to make any sense of it. Looks like this week's lesson will be a remedial course in chord construction.

Drunken weekend...spent most of Saturday at Slugger's with a bunch of the guys from work hitting beisebols and watching my brackets get singlehandledly ripped to shreds: Stanford, Kentucky, Gonzaga, all gone no more bye bye.

Today's fun news item comes courtesy of the state of West Virginia.

Do The Right Thing...

One year and 538 deaths layer, most Americans still think ">we did the right thing in Iraq...

I've always had mixed feelings about this whole caper. On one hand, it's become painfully obvious that W lied about the WMD over there in the desert, but at the same time the 28,000 bodies in mass graves prove that Saddm was pretty much a dick and needed to be taken out.

Temper, Temper...

John F'n Kerry lets another naughty word fly...

Thursday, March 18, 2004

Whipped up a St Paddy's feast yesterday. So damned simple I won't even link to a recipe--just throw a 3 lb brisket, pound of little taters and an onion into a crock pot. Cook on low for 8 hours, throw in cabbage wedges and cook on low for 2 more hours.

The brisket fell apart as soon as I took it out of the pot. Like buttah, baby.

Oh, and who's a more manlier man, Ratboy or Lurch?
That Crazy Kid...

Courtney Love decided to get nutty on Letterman last night. I didn't realize she's 39...yowza, time sure has flown by.

Happy Jack and Barack...

Looks like it should rhyme, but it doesn't.

For what it's worth, I voted for Steve Rauschenberger, who ended up a disappointing 3rd after picking up a lot of steam over the weekend. Jack!ass looked sweaty and feverish on TV last night and had none of his usual fake and bake glow. And he's got wretched bottom teeth (but they sure are pearly white).

Every station who interviewed him dogged him about 2 things--the divorce papers and what it's like being an elephant nominee in a donkey state. He gave the same answer for both questions.

Obama wins this in a landslide.

Seedy Jack Ryan Rumours...

True or untrue? Ilk reports, you decide...
Back From Florida...

Made it back on time in spite of seemingly every force both natural and unnatural conspiring to make us late--from a long line at the rental car return forcing us to miss our 5:50 flight (ended up catching the 7:00 AM instead), getting stuck circling Southern Georgia for 40 minutes in wicked turbulence while we waited for fog in Atlanta to lift, losing our luggage (which thankfully showed up on the next flight), yadda yadda. Anyhow, here's a random disjointed rundown:

-Ballgames we saw: Friday Atlanta at Philly, high point of which was watching Chipper "Laaaaaaaaarrryyy" Jones have a little fun with some big drunk dudes sitting near us out in RF. He took the abuse pretty good-naturedly, and signed autographs for like 35 minutes after he left the game. He was nowhere near the sourpuss I thought, but is instead more of the big ol frat-boy cracker type. Phils play their ST games in a sweet new yard, Bright House Networks Field. One of the great things about ST games is just sitting bullshitting with the fans around you, and this game had by far the best bunch I encountered...everyone from a retired teacher from Berwyn who answered to TBone to a irish chap named Ian sporting a Cov City football jersey who knew baseball better than a lot of Americans.
Saturday took a drive down to Fort Myers to watch the Twins take advantage of a Dodger 9th inning meltdown. Check out the pitching line on one Doug Nickle..talk about a choke. Dave Roberts from LA is the real deal, reminds me of a smaller Kenny Lofton. Another cool thing about ST is the fact all these guys run the bases with wild abandon--saw more steals in 4 days than I saw all last season with the Sox..well, I exaggerate a little.

Monday was a matchup between the Tigers and Pirates in Bradenton. Packed house to watch 2 cellar dwellers duke it out in a pretty ratty stadium in a decaying Florida town. I did get to BS with Dimitri Young before the game though and told him the whole story of how he broke my finger at the Cell last summer. He cracked up and said he'll throw to Kris next time.

Aside from baseball--the other high point of the trip was the traffic. Seemed everywhere we went something jackknifed or someone blew off the road. Got stuck on i-75 for 2 hours Saturday night. MOst of the traffic we were stuck in was the ubiquitous Bubba Trucks that are everywhere in the Sunshine State.

You might be a Bubba Truck driver if...
...your wheels of choice are an F150, Ram or S10
...you have a Bucs sticker on your door or tailgate (bumper stickers don't count)
...you have a window sticker commemorating either one of the Earnhardts
...you've got at least 4 wheels...just in the rear

Started and finished _Positively Fifth Street_ while down there. Great book that makes me want to fly to Vegas next month and try and win a seat in the WSOP. Had our own Wilkins World Series Of Poker Frday night and got schooled by my old man.

Dad and Gerry are doing great. Guess in the end that's what matters most.

Hmmm...and it looks like John F'n Kerry got caught in the George Bush-Dick Cheney-Adam Clymer open mike trap last night.
John McCain, my favorite maverick, calls out the juicers in baseball. Bush brought this up in his SOTU address back in January, and I applaud both of them for it.
Good Morning. 43 and sunny in Chicago today, but the wind is cold. It's considerably warmer in Valrico, FL, where we'll be tomorrow night. Masochistic me likes most that the UV Index is 8, which means there's a pretty good chance I'll come back red as a lobster. It all fades to smooth brown sooner or later.

John F'n Kerry was in Chicago last night rallying the troops ahead of next week's primary here, not that he has any competition left.

The right-wing freaks on the Illinois Leader think some big bomb is going to drop in the Illinois GOP Senate race this weekend. I hope it's something against Jack Ryan...that guy is going to be easy pickings for the Dems in November. He doesn't stand for anything.

Sox got lit up in spring training action yesterday. Rough outing for Garland and Buehrle, hopefully it's because they were experimenting and not because they're scuffling.

Is it me, or does Chicago City Hall sometimes resemble a Sopranos episode?
Good Morning. Snowy and 35 in Chicago today. I'm actually able to count the hours until we head off to Florida with sunshine and highs in the upper 70s (I wonder if that's warm enough to get a tan). Looking forward to the trip immensely...my sister is down there as well. Funny, she only lives 90 miles away from Chicago, but the only time I ever see her is when we're both in Florida.

The Sox continue to shine in Spring Training out in the desert. Not that that means very much other than that their minor leaguers ain't half-bad. They actually almost managed to blow a 6-1 lead against Oakland yesterday but somehow the AA lackeys in the bullpen managed to get the job done in the end.

So what else is in the news? The Tribune had a great piece about how the remodeling of the Chicago Board Of Trade's old trading floor is unearthing sme really cool surprises. I'd love to go over and see it, but I'm guessing that if it took an invite from the Chairman just to get his father to be able to see the artifacts, there's no way in hell that an ex-pit flunky like me would be able to check it out.

Eric Zorn, who I almost never agree with, has a great column about the Dems' attempted hatchet job on Barack Obama, who I could never vote for in a million years, but have a ton of respect for nonetheless. Eric points out that like they almost always do, the Dems are resorting to using abortion as a scare tactic. I have no idea why they tend to run their campaigns based entirely on abortion--then again Bush running his entire campaign based on 9/11 and the "War On Terrah" doesn't make much sense either.

More later.

Well, here goes nothing. I've been journaling since I was 8, so blogging is a logical step.

Here you'll find a collection of ramblings on baseball, politics and just about everything else.
